When a chimney doesn’t draft properly, it can fill your home with smoke, leave a strong odor, and waste energy. Draft issues are one of the most common complaints we hear from Maryland homeowners, especially in older homes or properties exposed to heavy winds.

Common Causes of Draft Problems

1. Chimney Too Short – If your chimney doesn’t meet the 3-2-10 rule (3 feet above the roof penetration, 2 feet higher than anything within 10 feet), draft will often fail.

2. Blockages – Creosote buildup, bird nests, leaves, or other debris can reduce airflow.

3. Improper Flue Sizing – An oversized flue allows smoke to linger and cool, while an undersized flue restricts flow.

4. Negative House Pressure – Exhaust fans, clothes dryers, and HVAC systems can compete with your fireplace for air.

5. Cold Flues – Chimneys located on exterior walls get cold quickly, making it difficult for warm air to rise until the flue is primed.

Solutions toDraft Problems

Extend the chimney height to improve airflow.

Install a properly sized stainless steel liner.

Add a top-sealing damper to stop downdrafts.

Open a nearby window when starting a fire to equalize pressure.

Preheat the flue with newspaper or kindling before adding logs.

Draft problems vary by home. A professional inspection with a camera can identify the exact cause and the safest fix.
